Emery is a 15-year old freshman who started sewing with me when she was 12 years old. She did a few projects with pre-made patterns and then decided that she wanted to go a different direction. She wanted to make her own Halloween costume.

That year, she made a dress to look like Eliza (from Hamilton) from a pattern off the rack, which we changed to look like Eliza. It turned out beautifully, and later she even went to New York with her mom and wore her Hamilton dress to the musical!

The next year Emery wanted to be a 50s girl. She found a reprint of a 1950s dress and got some fabric and made a really cute 50s dress. We got it done just in time to wear for Halloween.

For her next project, she decided to make the Yule Ball dress from Harry Potter. She ordered the pattern online, but it came with no instructions and what was printed on the patterns were in Russian and very limited English. Luckily, we were able to find someone online who made a similar dress, and between following her and using our pattern, we did ok. She started it last November 2021 and just finished it, it took a little over a year to finish. Emery plans on wearing it to her Winter Formal later this winter.

Her next project is to make her own pattern and sew a dress based on her own design. She’s taking a course through Cascadia Tech Fashion Design program and hopes to major in Fashion Business Management someday. I have loved watching Emery grow throughout the past three years and I can’t wait to see where she goes from here!
