December 2013 Newsletter

The holidays are upon us and I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I did, as always surrounded by friends and family. We ate delicious food and had lots of fun. And now I am looking forward to Christmas, my favorite holiday. There’s much to appreciate about the season – the joy and twinkle in the eyes of children, the trees and decorations, Santa and the birth of Christ. May your holiday season be wonderful!

Tip of the Month: Stray Thread Help

Here is a simple help with all those threads that miss the trash can or get stuck to your pants.

Grab a lint roller and run it where those pesky threads have landed!

November 2013 Newsletter

What a wonderful and very full summer and fall! My sister Tonya and nephew Skyler visited in June, where we played in Rock Creek and worked on finishing up some things in my new home and sewing room. In August Tonya and I also attended my 40th High School Reunion in Twin Falls, where I saw old friends, made new ones, ate great food, and even rode a zipline over the sagebrush in the Snake River Canyon!

My final big trip was to Disney World and Universal in Florida with my daughter Stephanie’s family and our friends the Rex family. It was such fun! I might say Harry Potter Wizarding World was the best, but there were so many wonderful things I just cannot mention them all.

I had some fun sewing camps this summer, too! I also finished up teaching at my Woodstock location, which was a hard decision. But because of weather issues and the time it took me to get back and forth, I’ve decided to teach only out here in Happy Valley. It has been a struggle but I am determined to make it work.

As autumn marches on toward wintertime, the urge to sew may be brewing! Check out the camps and workshops listed below or on my website for more information about the many sewing offerings.

Members are asked to display their talents, and there will be plenty of things to appreciate. Plus the building is quite wonderful! If you like old Portland architecture you would love to see this. I’ll be doing a display of my stuff and a demonstration and might include things for kids to sew. I’d love you to come!

Tip of the Month

sewing suppliesKeep all the sewing supplies you need in a drawer, shoe box, bowl, or sewing box right by your machine. I recently read a blog from someone on “31 Days to Organize Your Kitchen.” I read her suggestion of putting all like things together (baking things in one drawer and all things needed for breakfast together, etc.)
This made me think that would be a great idea for essentials to have next to your sewing machine so you did not have to get up each time you need something. This is especially important if your sewing area is not permanent, such as sewing on your dining room table. Make a Go Box for your sewing supplies!

Project of the Month

red coat projectThis month’s project was made by one of my adult sewers. She is doing the seven-level program I teach called Learn to Sew You Can Make It.

Charisse chose to make a long coat out of red wool. Isn’t it just wonderful? I especially love her choice of big black buttons. Now I want to make one for me!

Nice work, Charisse. I’m sure that coat will keep you toasty as the temperatures drop.

This Weekend: Last Chance for Gift-Making Workshops

Last month we had Christmas Workshops During Thanksgiving Vacation. They were mostly full and we had a fun time making gifts for our families. I just love these workshops; seeing these kids make heartfelt gifts for their friends and family members is so satisfying.

I know a few of you were unable to come and had friends who wished they had signed up. So I’ve decided to add two more last-chance options!

Join us on Friday, December 7th, from 4:00 – 7:30 pm, with pizza and pop served in the middle as a dinner break, or Saturday, December 8th from 1:00 – 4:00 pm.

Cost is just $30, which includes all the materials and gifts that the students will produce. The workshops will be held at my Happy Valley location, 16661 SE Rock Creek Court.

Contact me to register or for more information.

This is an amazing gift-creating opportunity. In just three hours, students can make between 7 and 10 items. What better way to get a significant jump on holiday gift-giving?

There will be 15-20 projects to choose from, which will provide a wide selection of potential gifts for children and adults, both male and female. All materials are provided, and will be cut and ready to sew!

On the Wild Side (NEW). December 26th, 27th, 28th; 9:00 am – 12:00 pm. Make three wild animals stuffies – monkey, elephant, and giraffe. All supplies included. $130.

Become a DIVA. December 26th, 27th, 28th; 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm. After this camp you will be one step closer to being a diva. Come make a tutu bag to carry your diva supplies, a diva skirt, leggings, diva tee shirt. $120. Supply list provided at time of registration.

Project of the Month: Make Your Own Umbrella!

A while ago, a student asked me to help her make an umbrella kit. Ever since then, I’ve wanted to make my own.

So here it is! I had such fun with this, from picking the fabric to the quick and simple assembly. It’s very easy to make; you just purchase the frame and pattern, all available at cool cottons, a fantastic fabric store on Hawthorne in SE Portland. There is only one pattern piece that you cut out 8 times, sew them together, and finish the seams. You put the finished cover on the frame, tack it down, and waterproof the fabric.

For more pictures and information on this project, see my blog, and stay dry this rainy season with your own personalized umbrella!

Tip of the Month: Beautiful Finished Edges

Do you need to own a serger sewing machine to have beautiful finished edges? No! While sergers are nice to have, you can finish your edges without one with the following tips:

  • The easiest way is just to use pinking shears. After you are finished sewing each seam, use the zig-zag pinking shears to trim the bare edge of seam, then press the seams open.
  • Alternatively, pink the edge as described above, then sew next to the pinked edge, and press open as before.
  • Finally, you can make a zig-zag stitch close to the edge and then press open the seams.

These tips help your project stand the test of time while looking and feeling good inside and out.
Don’t let the season pass you by without registering for a class or a workshop! You can contact me for questions or registration.

Upcoming Workshops for Kids
Are you ready for Christmas Workshops During Thanksgiving Vacation? Once again I’m hosting this amazing gift-creating opportunity, in the form of a fun holiday break workshop!

You have four possible workshop options: Monday 11/19 or Tuesday 11/20, either morning (9am to noon) or afternoon (1pm to 4pm). Cost is just $30, which includes all the materials and gifts that the students will produce. All four workshops will be held at my Happy Valley location, 16661 SE Rock Creek Court.

Contact me to register or for more information.

I’m also considering holding one or two workshops during the December holiday break at my Happy Valley location, depending on interest. Call me at (503) 804-7259 or email to check availability.

Fashion Show Fun for Students

JoLene 2012-191W

In June, twenty-two of my students participated in the Third Annual JoLene’s Sewing School Fashion Show. Along with two camp helpers, the youngsters had the opportunity to model two outfits they made, showing off their fine sewing skills!

Check out my blog for more details, plus a gallery of photos where you can see the students’ beautiful work.

Project of the Month: Wild Side Stuffed Animals
This summer I started a new camp called Wild Side, which gave my students an opportunity to make adorable stuffed toys.

This little girl did a great job; she made a giraffe, a zebra, and a monkey.

Tip of the Month: Straight Sewing

When I have new students a common question is that sewing straight looks so easy, but how do you actually make it straight? Here are some pointers:

  • You can purchase fabric guides that either screw into your machine or have a magnet that sticks. Line up your fabric on the edge of the guide and sew.
  • Create your own guide by placing painters tape on your sewing machine. Line up your fabric on the tape when you sew and voilà your line is perfectly straight!
  • Take an old sheet, cut into strips, and practice by sewing two strips together. Before you know it your stitching line will be perfectly straight!

Weekly Classes are now open for registration! Find them under Child/Teen Classes. Dismiss
