My sewing students once again participated in the Multnomah County Fair, held the last week in May. My love of fairs is well known! The past four years since I’ve been sharing sewing with students, I have written about how much I love fairs, food, rides, exhibits, and all the rest. To me, fairs are all about families, fun, and doing our best. It’s a celebration of the results of labor, of hard work, of the joy of doing a good job.

Many of my sewing students put their best items in the fair to be judged. As far as I’m concerned, all my students are winners. Each one of them learns something new every single time they get up to their sewing machine to sew. They put their best efforts into learning a craft, and always improving.

Participating in the fair gives another nudge to the students to push themselves that little bit further to do do just a bit better. Learning to make things, to hone a craft, is one of the great pleasures of teaching kids to sew.

I am so proud of each and every one of them.

Happy Sewing,
JoLene
